Latest Updates

We are occupying College Green in central Bristol in solidarity with the global occupy movement, started by Occupy Wall Street.

We believe in people not profits, and in fairness.

Ordinary people right now are paying the price of a recession caused by bankers. But bankers seem to be the only people who aren’t suffering because of it.

People all around the world – millions of people, in over 1,000 cities – are coming together to express their frustration, to share their stories, and to talk about ways the world could be different.

If you are interested, College Green is now a space where anyone can come down, find out more, and get involved. We’re friendly and do not bite! :-)

A brief summation of events at the ‘Block the Bridge’ Occupation

Location: London Westminster bridge
Date: Oct 9 2011

Event recorded employing livestreaming facilities by who we now know as ‘

Today’s occupation ’Block the bridge was backed and facilitated by UK-unCut organisation and was a success with over 2000 people of all ages and cultures converging on Westminster bridge from around the country, to show solidarity and support in opposition to the NHS bill.

A general assembly was convened at 1pm so that individuals and groups could present speeches and arguments against the proposed changes and to convey their fears for the future of the NHS as a result of the bill.
A common theme was that the bill will inevitably result in the privatisation of the NHS and that reassurances from the government to the contrary could not be relied upon. There was a heavy presence from the health service sector all of whom seemed to share this common concern.

A banner drop was made at 2pm reading: ”Save our NHS” to the sound of drums echoing across the bridge in unison with the cheers and chants of the protesters.

The protest moved off slowly at first but the pace quickened in a march around 4:30pm the group moved quickly Chanting: ”They say CUT BACK, we say FIGHT Back” and the new statement sweeping the world ”We are the 99%”
The Police followed behind at first keeping pace with the marchers, as the protestors made their way across another bridge believed to be Lambeth bridge, suddenly police in riot gear blocked their path forward, another line quickly formed to their rear to complete a kettle.

As has been demonstrated in the past the practice of ‘Kettling’ seldom resolves anything but serves to escalate any situation to violence yet is still utilised as a first response to any protest taking place in London. Fortunately the protesters did not respond to this provocation and remained calm whilst their rights were violated,

The group begin singing, the message of peace and change still is focused in this group. Legal Observers accompanying the group being kettled challenge the police’s authority to detain the protesters and enquire as to what power they do so. Their questions go unanswered for the most part.

As time passes there are reports of police arrests transmitted through the crowd, and also reports that the police are attempting to confiscate camera equipment and footage.

The cameraman does a great job of spanning the crowd, with over 150 – 200 viewers from around the world tuned in to the live stream, He then unfortunately gets singled out by the police and is lead out peacefully by a Police Officer – and escorted away from the crowd, leaving the kettled group behind. As he leaves the kettle he is served with a breach of the peace order under section 50 of the public order act.

From the live footage – filmed only on ‘Tims’ camera, the world watches on as the police first throw a protestor to the ground and then arrest him – and rip off his scarf, they appeared to offer no explanation for this action.

Individuals were taken from the crowd one by one and their details and photographs taken it is not yet known if this was entirely voluntary or if under duress or fear of arrest.

This tactic is suspected to have been deployed to remove him from the area and prevent him from keeping a public record of events taking part on the bridge, a common tactic employed by the police in such situations. He remained polite and courteous to the officers throughout.

We at Occupybritain.co.uk would like to voice solidarity with those taking part in the march today and thank them for being the voice of the people in spite of the clear attempts to discourage them.

Together we can make a difference.

We are the 99% of Norwich, Norfolk, United Kingdom.

Occupy Norwich is inspired by Occupy Wall Street, a leaderless resistance movement with people of many colors, genders, abilities and political persuasions. The one thing we all have in common is that We Are The 99% that will no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the 1%.

Come on down on to the Haymarket on October 15th, bring your placards, bring food and drink and warm clothing if you intend to stay. We don’t know how long this will last, but the first step is to get ourselves down there together, talk and plan, make friends, reconnect with our local community, and make it OURS!
